Meet Our Staff:


Alexander "Ted" Alvarez, CPA, MST

President; Alexander Alvarez & Company

Ted Alvarez graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He passed the CPA exam while working for Arthur Young Accounting Firm in the audit division. In 1989 he earned a Master’s of Science in Taxation Degree from Golden Gate University. Ted has remained in public accounting primarily working on compilation accounting engagements and tax preparation for individual clients, businesses, estates, and trusts. In 1997 he purchased an established accounting firm in Laguna Beach and over the years it has grown steadily. With his commitment to provide his clients with superior customer service he has added to his staff to maintain the superior level of service his clients have come to expect.


Edward Esquerra

Accounting Manager

Edward Esguerra joined the firm in 2000.  Since 1988 he has held various positions in the public accounting field and has experience as a controller in the private accounting sector. Ed has worked in many different areas of accounting including taxation with corporations, partnerships and individuals, auditingand financial statement preparation. He has extensive experience with QuickBooks, Quicken and other client write-up software. 


Gail Schickling, MBT, CPA 

Tax Manager

Gail Schickling joined the firm in 2014, previously with Nancy Baumann since 2005. Gail graduated from California State University, Fullerton in 1984 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and from USC in 1991 with a Master’s in Business Taxation. Gail began her career at Deloitte working in their tax department. She earned her CPA in 1988 and from 1990-2005 she worked for various public accounting firms on a part time basis while raising her family. Gail has extensive expertise in business and individual taxation, tax planning, and compliance.


Angela Vicario

Senior Tax Accountant

Angie is a graduate of California State University Long Beach and has been with Alexander Alvarez & Company since 2015, as a senior tax accountant and CPA candidate. She prepares tax returns for high net worth individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts and estates.

Her prior experience also includes eight years in public and private accounting where she worked preparing financial statements, compilations and reviews and performing non-profit audits. She has also worked on forensic/fraud engagements for commercial clients. Additionally, Angie has extensive experience in preparing accountings that are submitted to the court for trust, estates and conservatorships.

Outside of the office Angie enjoys spending time at the beach and being surrounded by family and friends. Angie is also a Rotary club member of Laguna Beach and enjoys giving back to the community.

Tom Alvarez, CPA

Partner

Tom Alvarez graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.  He passed the CPA exam while working with Coopers & Lybrand, Los Angeles in the audit division.  In addition to his public accounting experience, Tom has held senior accounting and financial positions with public, private and governmental entities.  This experience provides a unique blend of operational, accounting and finance experience. Tom is currently in a Master of Taxation program through Golden Gate University.


Larry Black

Tax Accountant

Larry Black is a Laguna Beach native who earned his degree from the University of California, Irvine in Economics.  He has worked and been an integral part of our company for over 11 years as a tax preparer.  He offers extensive knowledge in the taxation of indivduals, including those of high net worth.

Eli Skarsten, CPA

Tax Manager

Eli is a native of Orange County and earned his accounting degree at California State University, Fullerton in 2007. After graduating he began his career at a small firm in Corona Del Mar with a focus on high net worth individual income tax planning and compliance. While working there he earned his CPA license before joining a firm in Irvine that primarily focused on individuals who own their own business. Eli joined Alvarez & Company in 2018, bringing with him his strong tax background in handling the taxation of stock options, rental real estate, 1031 exchanges, trust and estate returns, as well as entity tax returns such as partnerships, S-corporations, C-corporations and tax-exempt organizations. Eli lives in Laguna Hills and is an avid golfer who also enjoys cooking.

Katherine Melville

Bookkeeper

Katherine is a graduate of New York University and has been with our company since 2015.  She began working in an accounting office in 2013, where she reignited her passion for numbers, and is currently taking accounting courses at Saddleback College.
